Heat pump vs. AC: should you switch?
A heat pump heats and cools with one efficient electric system. Here’s when it’s worth it, what it saves, and which rebates still apply.
What a heat pump actually is
A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse — so one system both cools in summer and heats in winter, without burning any fuel on-site. That's the whole pitch: efficient electric heat, and you retire the furnace.
Is it the right call for you?

Carbon
Switching off gas or resistance heat typically cuts heating emissions by an estimated 1.5–4 tons of CO₂ a year — and the cleaner your local grid, the bigger the cut. (Rough national estimate; depends on your grid and usage.)
Rebates (2026 reality)
The federal 25C credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. But state and utility rebates — and IRA HEAR electrification rebates where your state has launched them — can still cut thousands. Check DSIRE for your area →
